Sclerotherapy Q & A

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are dilated blood vessels that form small lines on the surface of your skin, typically in web-like patterns. Technically called telangiectasia, spider veins are often red, blue, or purple. They're mainly a cosmetic concern, not a medical one, and are most likely to appear on your face and legs.

Spider veins are common, with 60% of women and men developing them in their lifetime. Although spider veins can form on anyone, they’re most often seen in women over the age of 50. Other risk factors include:

  • Hormonal influences, including puberty, pregnancy, and menopause
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Hormonal birth control
  • Heredity
  • Standing for long periods of time
  • Obesity
  • Constipation
  • Smoking

What is sclerotherapy?

During sclerotherapy, your Vintage Wellness provider injects a solution into your spider veins. The solution irritates the interior lining of your vein, and it eventually collapses. When that occurs, the blood clots, the vein becomes scar tissue, and it disappears.

After sclerotherapy, your spider veins don’t fade immediately. You can notice and enjoy the full results within a month of treatment.

In addition to eliminating the appearance of your spider veins, sclerotherapy also relieves any symptoms they create, including:

  • Itching
  • Sores
  • Rashes

What can you expect during a sclerotherapy treatment?

You’re likely to be quite comfortable during a sclerotherapy treatment, but it’s possible to feel minor stinging or a cramping feeling. You shouldn’t be in excessive pain.

In this simple procedure, first, your provider injects the solution. Then, they compress and massage the area to disperse the solution.

You shouldn’t have any problems standing or walking following the procedure, and the Vintage Wellness team encourages you to walk to reduce your risk of developing blood clots. Expect to wear compression socks or bandages for a couple of weeks after your treatment.

Sclerotherapy is safe, and studies have shown that 60%-80% of treated veins disappear. You may require more than one treatment to achieve your desired results.
